http://www.voanews.com/khmer-english/news/Opening-Statements-Conclude-in-Khmer-Rouge-Leaders-Trial-134603118.html

The trial of the three remaining most senior leaders (there are others of course) has begun. This article summarizes the first week with photos of the three defendents and an outline of the cases against them. Many Cambodians right across the country are angry… that these three – on the one hand… say ‘we did what had to be done’ and on the other hand claim they committed no crime. Its important that you read this if you want to try to understand what happened. The trial will continue for some months but the opening is important. We may insert articles within The Khmer Rouge Section itself (see right) but for now, it is in the blog. John.

This is the link to the news item I talked about yesterday. In an attempt to solve the problem of 1000s of people fainting in garment factories the government has ordered that the 400,000 workers receive a pay rise of $5 a month – taking their monthly wage to $66.

No electricity and battery about to die…. so please check in 24 hours… basically the 400.000 (not 300,000) workers will get a pay rise frm $61 per month to $66 per month starting in January, since someone has decided to blame nutrition!!! more tomorrow.

There’s a blog earlier about faintings and the writer wanted additional news. I repled (which is below) and I repeat it here, since my reply covers news from Cambodia in general:

Hi… these faintings are happening very often… about once a week at least.. you see there are around 300,000 people working in the garment industry, with often 1000s in one shed. The Voice of America Khmer edition and the Phnom Penh Post (both online) usually report them. Nothing has changed since the blog I posted and blame is not accepted by the company owners. I. John, write the blog and have today returned to Cambodia from Australia where I was talking to Rotary groups…. I will catch up the biggest issue of the moment – The Khmer Rouge Trials, the faintings and new issues as they arise… Updating of our village projects over the coming weeks will be done. Thanks for your comment

4000 Cambodian villages to receive insecticide treated mosquito nets

http://www.irinnews.org/report.aspx?reportid=94195 This is a link to a report from ‘the UN office for the coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. So far, we don’t know which villages but it does involve millions of nets. Mosquito nets are great if you USE THEM and are UNDER THEM. They do nothing at sunset or early morning which are times when all rural Khmer are out of bed…BUT they will save many lives and lower disease rates.. Everyone wishes that more money was spent on mosquito control, irradication and vaccines research etc.

In the Khmer Rouge section there is one of Vann Nath’s famous paintings of his horrific time in S21.. There is also an article written in ‘Lonely Planet’ in July 2010 – 14 months before Vann Nath’s death. There is also an article from The Phnom penh Post about his death in September 2011.

Today we wrote this reply to a comment made below on the 9th. Our schools and projects are not in isolation. They are in Cambodia. We are here because of History and on-going news. That is why the site covers many of Cambodia’s issues. But the core of the site, starting with the ‘ABOUT’ page is our schools…

This is a copy of the comment you can find below. “Thanks. There are many charity writers in Cambodia but almost all of them concentrate solely on their school or orphanage or their particular rights issue. What we are trying to do (only been writing since June 2011!) is put our region in the contexts of History and News and anything that impacts Cambodia – hence us. John.”
