Khmer New Year in Marsden Queensland Australia.

In CategoryJohns blog

Marsden is a small suburb 30 minutes south of the centre of Brisbane close to central east coast of Australia. Like many places Cambodians came here mostly in the early 1980s from refugee camps just across the border in Thailand. Many regions in the USA, France, Austrlia, New Zealand, Germany, Canada and others became their new home. Most have had children or grand children born in their new countries. Some have returned to Cambodia and are helping with the gradual rebuilding of Cambodia but ALL still LOVE KAMPUCHEA – Cambodia.

Khmer New Year was 13th to 15th but celebrations were continuing all the week. We went from Beaudesert the 45 minutes to the Queenslaand WAT were 500 local Khmer were having a party and dance. (I had also visited a few days before in daylight – those photos include monks putting finishing touches to an elephant! and little Buddhas being prepared for sale and the monks accommodation.

The photos are all taken around the Wat (temple and monastery and centre of all activities) the stage erected next to the Wat had 8 Khmer performers who were brought over from Cambodia specially for New Year. The three flags are the Cambodian flag, the Buddhist Association  and the Australian flag.

Conference – Gold Coast Australia – 26 photos

In CategoryJohns blog

For three days – April 13, 14 and 15 – we ran a ‘stand’ or ‘display’ at the Rotary District 9640 Conference at Jupiters Casino on Australia’s Gold Coast.

We displayed over 80 photos with notes and a slideshow of a further 80 photos constantly running.

There were ‘bricks’ for sale for $100 per brick and there was a raffle at $5 a ticket for a painting (we are still selling tickets in that raffle and one of todays photos shows the painting.)

Friends had given us old inexpensive jewellery and small antiques to sel at the Conference – 100% of all sales goes to our schools and Clinic.

CHANTHOU. As posted earlier, Chanthou from our villages was in Australia for the Conference and is here till mid-May. We are visiting clubs, telling people and Cambodia and ‘educatingcambodia’.

I’ve added 26 photos from the conference; most are self explanatory but there are notes with some.

There is reference in the ‘Rotary’ section to this blog. The first photo is Chanthou at the stand.¬†John.

Overall our projects have received six medals from the Kingdom of Cambodia. These two medals are mine and later you’ll see a photo of Chanthou wearing hers.

Chanthou with graham Jones, the District Governor

There is a close up photo of a $5 note and a Casino chip! Very honest people in Australia. When were were not at the stand someone took a small $10 ornament and left the $5 AND the gambling chip!

And now several close ups of parts of the stand:

The oil painting we are raffling – see above.

Interestly, our best customers for our cheap jewellery AND for our antiques were the serving staff at the Casino!. Here’s a photo of Chanthou with our best customers!

Chanthou had a great time at the conference and everyone enjoyed meeting and talking with her about Cambodia. John.
